Sum by David Eagleman

David Eagleman is a neuroscientist who also majored in British and American literature, which is the best kind of neuroscientist. Sum, his first book, is a beautiful oddity, philosophical and playful and best read out loud. If you’re unconvinced, pick it up and read the first story. It will take just a minute, and it might take you somewhere unexpected.

The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman

I love what Christopher Buckley said about this book: "so good I had to read it twice simply to figure out how he pulled it off." It’s not quite a novel, but not really a short story collection either, but I don’t think that really matters. What matters is Rachman’s ability to form a character in two sentences and turn a whole story on a word. I’m still not quite sure how he pulled it off.

Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life by Brian L O'Malley

If you haven’t heard of Scott Pilgrim yet, hit yourself upside the head and pick this up. Scott is 23, with a high school girlfriend, an awful band, no job, and no motivation to take any responsibility for himself. Then comes Ramona Flowers. Interlaced with band battles, skateboard showdowns, and ninjas, are the real questions of who we are and how we get to be these people.

Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors by Michele Young-Stone

Separated by time and space, from middle America to the coasts, Becca and Buckley grow up in the 50’s through the 80’s, connected tenuously by the strikes of lightning that changed their lives. This is not a love story, but the search for identity and understanding amongst the strangers that surround us, and the chance events that shape our lives.

Across the Nightingale Floor by Lian Hearn

In the great tradition of samurai revenge films, Across the Nightingale Floor follows the story of 16-year old Tomasu, known as Takeo, who in feudal Japan is drawn into the complex game of politics and war. Samurai codes, marriage politics, secret ninja heritages, teenage true love and, of course, the over-whelming drive for vengeance for those dead.

Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok

If there were ever a story about the American dream, this is it. But not perhaps the dream you expect; this is a story of immigration, sweatshops, and desperate poverty, and of one girl’s struggle to rise into a better life using the only asset she has: her miraculous, untrammeled intelligence. I started reading this book in the middle of a move, and I burned through it in two days—it’s really that good!

Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart

The title is a dead giveaway that this isn’t a happy-ending kind of book. It is, however, the kind of book that proves that sad doesn’t mean bad. In a frightening future where books and the written word are now obsolete, Lenny still loves them. He also wants to live forever. Funny and insightful, this is a heartbreaking look at the importance of emotion and the ties that bind us.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Southern whites’ guilt for not expressing gratitude to the black maids who raised them threatens to become a familiar refrain. But don’t tell Kathryn Stockett, because her first novel is a nuanced variation on the theme that strikes every note with authenticity. In a page-turner that brings new resonance to the moral issues involved, she spins a story of social awakening as seen from both sides of the American racial divide. —The Washington Post

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

This whip-smart book skips through time, style, and tone with ease, as a dazzling array of complex characters struggle with who they’ve become, and with the violently changed world they find themselves in. Egan’s writing is subtle but has some pointed things to say about life, change, and humanity in general. Funny, melancholy, and captivating, this is a fresh, vibrant story that thrums with the energy of a finely tuned bass. I loved it.
