An Important Message From Bookshop Santa Cruz - COVID-19 Response

Update as of May 25th, 2020:

Governor Newsom has just announced that in-store retail shopping may resume statewide—but that reopening is subject to approval from county health departments.

Currently, the County of Santa Cruz has not lifted those restrictions. In addition, in order to maintain the highest levels of safety for our employees and our customers, Bookshop will not resume in-store shopping until we feel like we have put into place all of the steps to make Bookshop as safe as we can be.

Don't worry—you'll be the first to know when our doors reopen!

In the meantime, we wouldn't be here without your orders and your support. Our booksellers are standing by to get books in your hands via our website and phone orders, 10:00-6:00 daily (831-423-0900) for curbside pickup or shipping to your homes.

Thank you for your support!

April 13, 2020*

Dear friends,

In keeping with directives during this Covid-19 crisis, Bookshop Santa Cruz's doors are closed to the public. However, because we need books now more than ever, we will continue to be open by fulfilling web orders 24/7 and offering curbside pickup at our Front Street doors between the hours of 10am-6pm daily.

Curbside Pick-Up

Seven days a week (Monday-Sunday) you can call 831-423-0900 between the hours of 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM to speak with one of our staff to order and pay via credit card for books and other items for curbside pick-up. Our booksellers are prepared to give book recommendations over the phone as well, though you can also browse a selection of our recommendations here. Any in-stock items will be ready for curbside pick-up immediately. Out of stock items our staff can order, and you will be called once they are available for pick-up (usually within 2-3 business days). When you know your order is ready, please drive up or walk to our entrance at 825 Front Street and give us a call. Our booksellers will then bring out your order to you.

You can also order for curbside pickup at www.bookshopsantacruz.com by selecting curbside pickup at checkout. Just wait for our call to confirm your order before heading down to pick up your items.

Ship to Your Door

Bookshop Santa Cruz ships books to your door, whether ordering through our website or by phone (831-423-0900). Choose Priority Mail as a shipping option or Media Mail rate (U.S. Postal Service guidelines dictate that Media Mail applies to orders that only contain books).

Now, more than ever, we need your support. Although we will be furloughing many of our employees, Bookshop is committed to making up the 30% difference in wages so that our staff can continue to live and work in Santa Cruz. By ordering online or doing curbside pickup, you will help us through this difficult time so that we can one day reopen to the public. Thank you.

As we move into this new model with the community by our side, I think of the Irish quote that adorns a bench we dedicated to my grandparents on West Cliff Drive. “Keep your face always towards the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you.” The community’s support is our sunshine and is what is sustaining us at this time.

Please take care, stay safe, and stay in touch.
