The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

If you have a teen who’s interested in horror but isn’t ready for Stephen King, give them anything by Brennea Yovanoff. She definitely knows how to balance creepy with romance and wit, making her books perfect for any teen interested in the genre. The Replacement takes place in Gentry, where every few years a child is stolen and replaced. Mackie is one such replacement, and when circumstances pull him into the world he originally came from, Mackie could be the one to change everything. This is a great, creepy book filled with humor and music. I loved it. Ages 12+
P.S. If they are ready for Stephen King, I highly recommend Pet Semetary. Even King thinks that it’s his creepiest book!

Endangered by Eliot Schrefer

“Dazzling, big-hearted…. As riveting as the action is, it’s the nuanced portraits of characters, human and ape, that makes the story so deeply affecting.” —The New York Times Book Review

The Minnow by Diana Sweeney

Like The Book Thief, this is a novel for both adult and young adult readers, and also like The Book Thief, it is almost perfect. The Minnow juxtaposes terse, clear, brief prose with an achingly lovely, lyrical, nonlinear narrative. I found it almost unbearable to finish the book and leave Tom’s company until I realized I probably never would. Tom would understand that and approve.

Gabi, a Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero

Quintero’s debut has all the noise, emotion, and joy of a big family fiesta. Saddled with fears of becoming “Hispanic Teen Mom #3,789,258,” 17-year-old Gabi’s first-person journal nevertheless illuminates a girl who will not identified by ethnicity, class, weight, or lifestyle.

Spare Parts by Joshua Davis

The true story of 4 undocumented Mexican American teenagers from an under-funded, under-supported Phoenix high school are challenged by their brave teachers to enter a national, collegiate level robotics competition--and they win. (Don't worry, I'm not giving anything away; it wouldn't now be a Hollywood-produced movie if they'd lost.) Joshua Davis is a master storyteller who is interested in more than just the shiny success story of these amazing students. What does it mean when this kind of potential is squandered, even deported? Spare Parts is entertaining, inspiring, and funny, without a doubt--but it's also a thought-provoking look at the modern "American Dream" and the institutions and prejudices that decide who gets to have a chance at it.

Seraphina by Rebecca Hartman

I absolutely love this book. The story of a girl in a magical land who harbors a secret heritage that could either ruin her life or save a kingdom, this lyrical book is filled with music, courtly intrigue, and plenty of adventure. Seraphina is perfect for anyone who loves a good book about a strong young woman finding herself. (And dragons. Lots of dragons.)

Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future by A.S. King

Things get weird after Glory and her friend drink the petrified bat. Glory, struggling with her upcoming graduation and concerns about her future, starts seeing visions of people’s futures—and what she sees is brutal. Not only is this book a roar of feminist-teen awesomeness, but I adored photograph-obsessed Glory, and loved watching her become a strong, assertive woman.

Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

I am so overjoyed that this book exists. Not only does it feature characters who are Mexican-American (YES) and gay (HELL YES); it's beautifully written, painfully true, and unforgettably touching. It's an absolutely spot-on portrayal of friendship blossoming awkwardly and inexorably into love.

Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

This book is the equivalent of that warm-crazy-high feeling you get when you're in a car during a storm with your best friend who you have feelings for and you don't know whether or not you're going to kiss them. And I didn't know how to put that feeling into words until I read that very beautiful scene. It's one of the most honest and amazing literary portrayals of coming to terms with your sexuality and identity.

West of the Moon by Margi Preus

“It’s amazing. Dark and resilient with a core theme that simply cannot be ignored. Yet for all that, Preus has tapped into a bit of harsh reality with her title that may give pause to all but the stoutest hearts. Fortunately, she tempers this reality with an artist’s license. With folktales and beautifully written prose. With a deep sisterly bond, and a serious consideration of what is right and what wrong and what is necessary in desperate circumstances. I don’t expect everyone to read this book and instantly love it, but I do expect people to read it. Slow to start, smart when it continues, and unlike anything you’ve ever really read before.” —Elizabeth Bird, School Library Journal
