Where the Animals Go by James Chesire & Oliver Uberti

When I first flipped this book open, I landed on the graph titled “The Plankton That Flee the Light,” and I fell in love with this book. I became lost in the intimacy the graphs provided, the thin lines and points that signified life and death had taken place, the places where elephants walk and sharks circle in order to avoid humans. I can’t remember the last time math has made me feel so hopeful. - Rachel

Spineless by Juli Berwald

Why are jellyfish populations growing? How does that growth relate to global warming? Oceanographer Juli Berwald goes on an epic adventure, including swimming with giant jellies off the shores of Japan and studying their stings in Israel. As she acquires more knowledge about the resilient (and in some cases immortal) jellyfish, she ends up learning even more about her own indomitable spirit. This is great memoir writing grounded by top-notch scientific research. Spineless is this year’s Soul of an Octopus. - Jason

Endangered by Tim Flach

Holy heck, this book is gorgeous. Flach’s goal was to portray sameness and otherness between humans and critters, connecting us all together in an emotional burst of “Yes, we must save them because look, they are us.” And he succeeds, with breathtakingly detailed photography (let’s count hippo chin hairs, shall we?) and reminders that we are both the animals’ stewards and the ones endangering them. This lovely book is intimate and grand. - Rachel

American Wolf by Nate Blakeslee

This is the true story of an all-American family, but it just so happens that this family belongs to O-Six, the alpha female of the Lamar Canyon wolf pack in Yellowstone National Park. American Wolf is a stellar example of nonfiction narrative, telling the story of one unique wolf as well as the history of wolves in the United States, their extirpation and recent reintroduction, their allies and those who cause them the greatest danger. - Melinda

The Genius of Birds by Jennifer Ackerman

Although just an afterthought for many, birds are smarter, and more creative and social than most people realize. From the cunning corvids to the thieving jays, the world of birds is as nuanced and interesting as any created by primates. This book may cause you to look up and around and, for the first time, see birds for the complicated creatures that they really are. - Aric

The Dragon Behind the Glass by Emily Voight

Exotic animal drama microhistories are my favorite subject, and this fits the bill perfectly. In her hunt for arowanas, a grotesque, ancient-looking fish that can command up to $150,000 for a single specimen, Voight finds herself searching through dark jungles, convention halls, and New York apartments. - Rachel

The Photo Ark by Joel Sartore

My favorite part of this book is the layout: a bamboo-eating panda paired with a ribboned seadragon, leafy green—bits mimicking each other. Or the asymmetrical mirroring of corals and wasps, Asian elephants and an elephant shrew. Sartore beautifully balances each animal’s individuality while showing how interwoven we all are on this planet. - Rachel

Natural Attraction by Iris Gottlieb

While many folks are familiar with symbiotic buddies like the clowfish/anemones and rhinos/oxpeckers, Gottlieb delves into the lesser known colleagues of the natural world. With gorgeous watercolor art and clean snarky language, it's one of my new favorites, both to casually browse and to buy for others. - Rachel
