Dark Was the Night: Blind Willie Johnson's Journey to the Stars By Gary Golio

Beautiful watercolors are used in this biographical picture book to tell the story of Blind Willie Johnson, one of the most iconic blues musicians to have ever lived. Using the little information we have on Johnson’s life, author Golio tells his own story to Johnson—leaving the reader feeling as though they have peeked into an intimate conversation describing the impact Johnson’s music would someday have on the world. A truly touching story, perfect for budding musicians. —MJ

Your Place in the Universe by Jason Chin

It’s easy to feel small in this wide and ever expanding universe, especially when you’re not yet very tall. This book gives readers a great sense of scale and upholds our place in the universe. Chin has a knack for taking large and complex concepts and making them accessible to everyone. The art is so detailed it’s easy to feel like the illustrations are real. This is a great book for science-minded kids, but everyone could benefit from the greater understanding it provides. —Ivy

The Next President: The Unexpected Beginnings and Unwritten Future of America’s Presidents by Kate Messner

This book surprised me in the best way! I didn’t think I’d be interested in a book about U.S. presidents, but this one fascinated me by presenting them both in a more honest (eg. the “founding fathers” don’t get a pass on being enslavers, while subtle shade is thrown at Trump) and interesting (highlighting all the future presidents alive during a certain year) light. Great for anyone interested in a more authentic and nuanced look at U.S. history.

Mother Jones and Her Army of Mill Children by Jonah Winter

This inspiring tale chronicles the March of the Mill Children, a trek from Philadelphia to New York made by child workers of textile factories and led by iconic labor activist Mother Jones. Mother Jones’ narration and a color palette made up of shades of gray and muted colors transports readers to turn-of-the-century America, in the union halls and factory floors where Jones spoke to workers. Perfect for teaching young activists the importance of strikes and collective action.

Honeybee: The Busy Life of Apis Mellifera

Not only is the book gorgeous—the illustrations themselves as light and airy as a bee’s flight—the prose strikes that perfect balance between lyrical and educational. Follow along with a honeybee named Apis as she grows up and explores the world (not as saccharine as it sounds, I promise). Perfect for budding naturalists and entomologists* (*people who study insects!).

It Began with a Page: How Gyo Fujikawa Drew the Way written by Kyo Maclear illus. by Julie Morstad

Gyo Fujikawa’s is the inspiring story of a Japanese American woman succeeding despite the social limitations of the early 1900s. This well-illustrated book will appeal to anyone interested in art, history, and feminism. Gyo’s dedication to bringing her multicultural artwork into the mainstream media was groundbreaking and, I believe, her greatest accomplishment and contribution to creating a more diverse society. - SC

This is a gorgeous book, perfect for art fiends and science lovers alike. Packed with information, it is well-balanced without being over-whelming, and the book itself is striking. It reminds us of our tiny blip-ness in the overall scheme of things and shows how connected everything is. Younger me would have spent hours staring at this book and current me is equally entranced. - Rachel

The President Sang Amazing Grace written by Zoe Mulford illus. by Jeff Scher

This book is for all of us—young and old, all races and ethnicities. The words and watercolors bring back that day in Charleston when “no words could say what must be said for all the living and the dead,” and President Obama lifted us out of despair by humbly singing “Amazing Grace.” Read the book, watch the video online, hear the song. Cry, and then share this with every child old enough to understand. There’s work to be done. - Noreen
