Jacques Pépin New Complete Techniques

“Fans of Pépin’s classic books La Méthode and La Technique rejoice: the master French chef has reshot all the photographs from those books for this new single volume. Everything from boning a chicken to making fancy decorative garnishes to (apparently) turning an old refrigerator into a smoker, Pépin shows you how to properly function in the kitchen with thousands of step-by-step photographs.” —Eater

Ready for Dessert by David Leibovitz

Lebovitz, who was the pastry chef at Chez Panisse for 12 years before relocating to Paris, has more experience making mind-blowing desserts than I can ever hope to have. His friendly, humorous writing makes any of his favorite recipes seem doable, and the names alone are mouthwatering: Black Currant Tea Crème Brûlée, Fresh Ginger Cake, and Anise-Orange Ice Cream Profiteroles with Chocolate Sauce. If you read his blog, you’ll know that he goes for a laid-back approach and favors taste over fussy presentation. Sounds good to me!

Barefoot Contessa Foolproof by Ina Garten

When I grow up, I want to be Ina Garten. I want her confidence, her elegance, and her knack for making everything from lobster bisque to roast beef sandwiches look absolutely effortless. (And the house in the Hamptons would be nice, too.) Ina’s newest book, Foolproof, covers everything from menu planning to prepping in advance, and the recipes range from Elegant Slow-Roasted Filet of Beef with Basil Parmesan Mayonnaise to Salted Caramel Brownies. This is a great resource for any host wanting to make an impression on their guests this holiday season.

Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl

One of my favorite books of all time and a frequent occupant of my handbag. In the first of her three memoirs, Ruth Reichl documents her ten years as the food critic for the New York Times. Her scathing wit and hilariously insightful anecdotes about visiting restaurants under various disguises are paralleled only by her tender, luscious, and genuinely passionate descriptions of food.

My Berlin Kitchen by Luisa Weiss

This book is part travelouge and part recipe collection, and I can't decide which part I love more. Weiss grew up flying back and forth between the U.S. and Berlin, and as a young adult she lived in Paris and New York City. Through it all, the kitchen was always the place she called home. You're going to want to cook every recipe in this book, trust me - and you'll have a great time doing so.

The Encyclopedia of Sandwiches by Susan Russo

Like Joey on Friends, sandwiches are definitely my favorite food. I could probably live off them alone. Some of the all-stars included in these delicious pages: the Hoagie, Cubano, Monte Cristo, French Dip, Chicken Salad, Hamburger, BLT, Denver, Falafel Pita, and SO MUCH MORE. My only advice: avoid the Doughnut Sandwich on page 78. Everything else: two thumbs up.
