Biography & Memoir

Rough Magic by Lara Prior-Palmer

Going into Rough Magic already knowing the outcome didn’t affect the reading experience for me at all. In fact, it made it an even better book, as I spent most of my time reading it shaking my head in disbelief and wonder at the shenanigans Lara was able to get up to. Starting with her impulsive joining of the Mongol Derby (622 miles in 10 days on 25 different half-wild ponies), she pushes herself along, drawing on a wild restlessness that bypasses any sort of training or preparation that she should have had. Rough Magic is travelogue and memoir, with a harsh, fond look at her childhood and a bittersweet exploration of how to find oneself in the world. - Rachel

Sissy by Jacob Tobia

Non-binary (NB), gender queer, and gender fluid folks have long been left behind as the queer community has grown louder. Here, shouting at the top of their fabulous lungs, comes Jacob Tobia. Their story is one that many other NB folks have had, and one that needs to be heard just as badly as any other queer experience. No journey of self-discovery is an easy road, but Tobia manages to shepherd us through their ups and downs with immense narrative grace. This book belongs in every queer studies course, and I hope it inspires other NB folks to tell their stories. - J

What You Have Heard is True by Carolyn Forché

My current favorite work of nonfiction, written by one of our best poets. It chronicles in stunning fashion her work in support of the revolutionary movement in El Salvador. Includes some of the stories she told us when she first visited Bookshop in the early 80s. Beautifully written and compelling. - Patrick

Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast

Chast paints a portrait of her aging parents' final days through four-color cartoons, short narratives, family photos, and original documents like her mother's handwritten poetry. Chast's colorful, often hilarious drawings are the perfect contrast to the darkness of oncoming loss and looming grief. This book will make you laugh and cry—sometimes simultaneously. - Kristi

The Immortal Irishman by Timothy Egan

For four hundred years to be Irish in Ireland was a crime. Its people, stubborn to a fault, did not take to fetters gently. Thomas Francis Meagher ached for a free Ireland though he spent most of his life in exile. Just in time for the Easter Rising centennial, Egan writes about Meagher with a fervor to match the man’s need for freedom. Meagher’s almost unbelievable life lit a fire in me. - Ivy

Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff

In this captivating account of one of history's most brilliant rulers, Pulitzer Prize-winning Stacy Schiff introduces us to a Cleopatra we have not met before and, in this case anyway, truth is far more interesting than fiction. I've been talking about it for years and can't see myself not bringing up this amazing woman in conversation any time soon. Can't recommend it enough! - Emma

This is a gut-wrenching and heart-opening. As Glennon recovers from multiple addictions, and deals with her husband’s infidelity, she goes on a deep spiritual journey and  rediscovers herself and a new relationship with god. She is a living example of how to be a Spiritual being, mother, and feminist. Impossible to put down, my wife and I both read this book in under three days. - Jason

Inheritance by Dani Shapiro

Shapiro tells the story of her surprise ancestry test that revealed that her father is not her biological father and therefore her identity, especially being raised deeply connected to Judaism, may not be as defining as she had believed. This book moved me as it dove deep into belonging, identity, family secrets, parenting, and the ties that bind in our ever-connected world. - Casey

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty

I fell in love with this book for the wonderfully written, humorous, heart-breaking story of Doughty herself. If you’re a fan of weird science or the macabre, chances are you’ve heard of this – the entertainingly honest memoir of a modern-day mortician. If, like me, you put off picking it up, take my word for it and hesitate no longer. I was fascinated by the humanizing facts of death. - Jocelyn

Deep Creek by Pam Houston

It takes a certain kind of person - animal-lover, star-gazer, adventure seeker - to thrive while living at 9,000 feet. Pam Houston’s full heart and indomitable spirit are on full display in this memoir, which contains all the meditative and hopeful vignettes fans of Houston have come to expect. A great choice for fans of Cheryl Strayed and Terry Tempest Williams! - Jess
