Fly! by Mark Teague

This book is laugh-out-loud funny! Mama Bird thinks it’s time for Baby Bird to fly. So she attempts a coercive strategy to get her baby out of their apparently too comfy nest, but Baby Bird has other ideas, as readers will see in the pair’s comical illustrated speech-bubble dialogue. When Baby Bird’s brattiness lands it on the ground, the hilarity soars—as does Mama Bird’s frustration with Baby Bird’s antics. Sure to elicit laughs from adult and child readers alike. - Stephanie

Saturday by Oge Mora

This splendid book by Caldecott honoree Oge Mora is an ode to resilience and the mother– daughter bond. Since Ava’s mother works “Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday,” Saturday is their special day together. The beautiful collage art is so charming and really makes the love between the pair palpable. When their plans go awry, the touching twist at the end provides a heartwarming conclusion that brought tears to my eyes. A great choice for any and everyone! - Stephanie

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia

Tristan Strong (what a great name!) didn’t expect his summer exile in the countryside to lead him to an alternate dimension where African American folktale characters are gods. He also didn’t expect that he could punch a hole in the sky. But relatable, reluctant hero Tristan has a summer full of all this and more, in a story that’s exciting and hilarious, with lots of depth and heart. Perfect for fans of adventure fantasy and especially for Rick Riordan enthusiasts. - Stephanie

The Okay Witch by Emma Steinkellner

Moth Hush loves fun witchy stuff. So she’s delighted to discover she’s a real-life witch from a line of powerful witches. But being a witch isn’t all fun and games. The historical bits add gravitas to this tale, making it one full of humor (Mr. Laszlo, Moth’s familiar, is one quippy cat) and heart. Fans of Raina Telgemeier and Victoria Jameison are sure to love this story about families, identity, and finding a place where you belong. - Stephanie

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

This original and bold book is for those who, like me, enjoy enigmas and complex questions. The town of Lucille is free of “monsters” (people who exploit others)—or at least that’s what Jam was taught. When a magical creature called Pet appears, Jam learns otherwise: There’s a monster in Lucille, and it’s in her best friend’s house. Impressively combining mystery with ethics, this story will keep you on the edge of your seat and thinking long after the final page. - Stephanie

There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool

Fans of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah J. Maas, look no further for your next read: This epic, high-stakes, multiple-narrator fantasy is for you! Ephyra, Beru, Hassan, Anton, and Jude’s lives are all thrown into chaos when an ancient prophecy begins unfolding. Pool’s fantasy world is detailed, distinctive, and immersive—I felt I was there with the characters and I stayed up too late trying to unravel the various enigmas integral to the story. I’m already looking forward to the sequel! - Stephanie

You don’t have to be familiar with previous Chirri & Chirra books to enjoy this utterly charming newest installment. A great choice for readers who enjoy fun, light adventures with a hint of magic. Don’t forget to read Chirri & Chirra’s other stories, too! - Stephanie

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

This beautifully-written debut is set in turn-of-the-20th-century New York City and seamlessly weaves fantastical elements into the historical setting resulting in a magical story that somehow still feels realistic.
