The Stranger

Not one but two Camilla Läckberg releases this summer? (The Hidden Child is brand new in hardcover and The Stranger is now in paperback.) My nerves can’t take it. Her creepy Scandinavian crime writing is incredibly suspenseful and atmospheric and her knack for portraying everyday evil is quite disturbing. I recommend reading these with the lights on.

In Love With a Wicked Man by Liz Carlyle

All the things! All of 'em! I really loved this book. The heroine is a wonderfully self-possessed woman, and the set up that lets her be so is fairly novel. The storyline has good twists and the romance seemed very believable with good realistic issues and not-so-outrageous solutions. And it was spicy, with a hint of danger, and a good dose of family drama thrown in.

Children of the Jacaranda Tree by Sahar Delijani

Reading Delijani's novel is like peeping into the living rooms of families torn apart by revolution and political strife. Three generations try to hold their lives together, to find and sustain love, to support their families, to heal from unspeakable wounds, and to live with unthinkable absences. It is a deeply moving story of life, death, persecution, and survival.

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

I adored this wonderfully quirky love story. Professor Don Tillman’s systematic, rational procedure for finding a wife is totally thrown off kilter by the entrance of Rosie. This is a genuinely feel good book — it won’t put your emotions through the paces and force cathartic epiphanies, but may expand your understand of those whose brain works just a little bit differently.

Fiction Ruined My Family by Jeanne Darst

With biting wit and droll presentation, Darst lays into her alcoholic family and the father who failed at fiction. She makes few excuses, spares no one’s pride—not even her own—and delivers laugh after laugh as she describes growing up in a world where using a cliché is far worse than swearing and the books you are reading are more important than your ability to remember where your pants are.
