Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan

Apparently the heart isn’t the only destination you can reach via the stomach. Pollan uses his expert investigative powers to present the back-story to four meals and his retelling of this digestive narrative changed my mind about how I eat, where I shop, and what I consider “affordable” food. This is an excellent book for anyone who loves food or just appreciates excellent writing.

The Bees by Laline Paull

I was completely engrossed by this incredibly imaginative and thought-provoking novel. You are introduced to a society so alien, yet Paull gives her characters an incredible humanity. The blend of real-life bee behavior and the fictionalization of the characters’ emotions is incredibly alien, and yet familiar. This is a tightrope walk of literary genius and I highly recommend it.

The Wife, the Maid, and the Mistress by Ariel Lawhon

Ariel Lawhon is a master at capturing a reader's interest and holding their heart captive right up to the last moment. I had very complicated feelings toward the three titular characters and my heart was stretched and pulled throughout their whole ordeal. The suspense, the history, and the atmosphere all combined to keep me up late at night.

The Who, the What, and the When by Volvovski, Rothman, & Lamothe

Pairing short essays with impressive illustrations, The Who, the What, and the When is a charming crash course in side-kicks.. Historically, aesthetically, and emotionally appealing, this book shows how many of our esteemed heroes found success because of people who believed in them, supported them, or (in some cases) challenged them.

Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay

When I was younger I struggled with the f-word; I wish I had had this book to guide the way. Roxanne Gay is both provoking and soothing--making you think a little harder about the state of the world and letting you know that it's ok to embrace your passions--even if they involve the color pink. This collection is honest while being pointed; it is fresh while being familiar.

A Sudden Light by Garth Stein

The North Estate holds more than just a decrepit mansion —there are family secrets, valuable real estate, and possibly a ghost or two. If Trevor helps convince his ailing grandfather to sell the place off, will the influx of much-needed cash really save his parents’ marriage? Or will it be just one more selfish violation of the environment of the Pacific Northwest? If you loved the family drama in Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain, you’ll find a lot to love in this new novel.

The Who, the What, and the When

This is a beautiful gem of a book—perfect as a gift or for personal indulgence. Each entry, which combines a well-researched write-up with gorgeous illustrations, details a person who played a role crucial in a historic event but who nevertheless remains relatively unknown. Historically, aesthetically, and emotionally appealing, this book shows how many of our esteemed heroes found success because of people who believed in them, supported them, or (in some cases) challenged them. Some stories are tragic tales of rivalries, some are heart-warming love stories; all are illuminating. The context they provide to already familiar stories is pure pleasure.

The Best American Infographics 2014

In a world obscured by an abundance of data, infographics are the eyeglasses that bring everything into focus. With an introduction by reigning king-of-data Nate Silver (The Signal and the Noise), this mind-blowing collection is educational, entertaining, and journalistic. And seriously, laugh-out-loud hilarious. With graphic representations of “How to be Happy,” “The Hunger Strike at Guantanamo Bay,” and “Beiber, Then and Now,” how could anyone resist?

What If? by Randall Munroe

People have sent Randall Munroe amazingly creative questions, like “Could you build a jetpack using downward-firing machine guns?” and he endeavors to answer them with the enthusiastic tenacity of STEM graduate students trying to please their dissertation boards. Fans of Munroe’s wildly popular comic xkcd don’t need any convincing. For the rest of you, think of What If? as the natural extension of shows like MythBusters—except with completely untestable scenarios and much geekier humor. Trust me, it’s transcendent.
