Louise's Reviews

Louise has been working at Bookshop Santa Cruz since 2012, and is now Head of Receiving. When she's not absorbed in a book (be it a law dictionary or a biography) she likes to play strange games with her cat Heyhey and discuss the more refined aspects of Star Trek. Louise is a transplant from the Central Valley of California, where she spent a lot of time developing a hay allergy and sitting on the edge of her bed playing guitar.

All There Is by Dave Isay

Since 2003, StoryCorps has been documenting the oral histories of people who might otherwise never have the opportunity. In this new collection, StoryCorps asks people to share their stories of love-—from found, lost, and found at last. Some stories are profoundly heartbreaking, while others offer a rare glimpse into real happily-ever-afters. A great read that may inspire you to record your own love history.

The Northern California Craft Beer Guide by Ken Weaver

The Northern California Craft Beer Guide is perfectly suited for the novice or the full-on snob. The best part is exploring the crazy whacked-up brews that Californians are toting in their alco-arsenal (I mean, BACON BEER, RIGHT?) This guide is the best thing since Lagunitas brought back the Brown Shugga'. Bonus: Santa Cruz haunts get great shout-outs!

The Heart Broke In by James Meek

James Meek parades before us a string of fascinating characters: among them a lecherous washed-up rock star, a dangerously ambitious biologist, a smug and repulsive tabloid editor, a vulnerable yet brilliant gene therapist, and an IRA operative turned poet. All of their stories intertwine to create a portrait of misguided love and despair. Hands down, the best book I've read in years.

Anatomy of an Epidemic by Robert Whitaker

George Polk Award winner Robert Whitaker reveals an alarming account of how the American mental health care paradigm has failed to keep those with debilitating diseases from living longer, happier lives. Whitaker presents his argument with no hint of agenda by including historical documents and first-hand accounts to connect the pieces of this puzzle.
