Kimberly's Reviews

Though Kimberly may be a bookseller at heart, she is lucky enough to currently run the Gift Department at Bookshop Santa Cruz. Some of her favorite things include: unrubbed kitten tummies, iced coffee, pizza, hoarding yarn, and Settlers of Catan (or just CATAN, as its current incarnation is so boldly called). Ah, but books, you ask? She loves books with quirky narrators and unlikely love stories. She likes off-beat historical fictions, pretensiously literary sci-fi, and anything that has beautiful pictures with words like "low-sew," "pizza stone," and "from Imbibe Magazine."

Bust DIY by Debbie Stoller

Bust has been dedicated to celebrating what it means to be a real woman for almost 20 years, and this collection of the best DIY projects is simply the end all, be all, of craft books! Home décor, gardening, jewelry, sewing, fashion, food, and everything in between! I feel confident saying that I literally do not need to buy another crafting anthology ever again.

Vogue Knitting by Trisha Malcolm & Art Joinnides

To say that I love the magazine Vogue Knitting would be a gross understatement. Started in 1982, the publication is a beacon for fashion-forward knitting and has become, at least to me, an invaluable source of inspiration. This long-awaited volume is a collection of some of the best designs from Vogue Knitting magazine. No matter your skill level, it has something for everyone, and is so beautifully photographed that it finds harmony between “coffee table book” and “practical pattern reference.”

Beard by Matthew Rainwaters

This slim volume is a photographic compilation of epic bearded proportions--men across the country who are proud to rock a face full of hair. Categories include: the best natural full beard, muttonchops, Hungarian/wild west beard, imperial moustache, and Alaskan whaler beard. I'm surprised Santa Cruz didn't make it into Rainwater's beard odyssey.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

In a post 9/11 New York Oskar Schell tries to cope with the loss of his father through an unusual quest. Having found a mysterious key, Oskar searches the city for its matching lock.  Funny, heartwarming, and a little bit bizarre,  Foer’s unique style is a must read.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

This is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read. Liesel’s experience in Nazi Germany unfolds with Death as a narrator—and tells of the power that friendship has to change lives, even under the worst possible circumstances. To be understood and accepted is a universal human need.

The City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers

As the Washington Post says, “Moers is equal parts J.K  Rowling, Douglas Adams, and Shel Silverstein.” This installment of Zamonian history is a wild romp of everything book related. Filled to the brim with literary puns and inside jokes, this quirky adventure will have the book-lover in you reeling with delight.

The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen

Junior cartographer T. S. Spivet maps what he sees: translating the world as he knows into diagrams and detailed drawings. His (fully annotated) journey from Montana to the Smithsonian combines, as Stephen King puts it, “Mark Twain, Thomas Pynchon, and Little Miss Sunshine.” Like nothing else I’ve read before.
