Karena's Reviews

Karena is in a non-monogamous relationship with Speculative Fiction, Romance, Feminist manifestos and any other little ARC that catches her eye. Snarky heroines are her weakness. She spends her nonreading time playing video games, traveling, and hanging out with her family (but really still thinking about what she could be reading).

The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

This debut novel blends Jewish mythology with Arabic folklore so masterfully and magically that you'll be engrossed instantly. A golem who loses the husband who created her and a jinni who finds himself freed from the prison that bound him meet and form a bond in not only the immigrant experience but against a threat in their turn-of-the-century New York City neighborhood. - Karena

Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown

A lady pirate kidnaps a chef off a ship she plunders then forces him to make dishes from the stolen cargo. Do you actually need any more than that? I adored this book. The best part is the inclusion of the recipes that our stalwart chef creates. - Karena

The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka

I love this book so much that every time I come across it at a bookstore I get so excited that I forget I own it and buy it again. Otsuka uses first person plural to engage you in the story of Japanese picture brides as they navigate what it's like to be immigrants starting in the late 1800's and following them to the beginning of the internment camps of WWII. - Karena

The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown

I have a very meta love of books about books and The Weird Sisters is very much about that love. It follows three complex (and often at odds) sisters who come home to care for their ailing mother. Told in first person plural narrative you feel instantly a part of their story. - Karena

Roses and Rot by Kat Howard

This debut from Kat Howard both charmed me and blew my mind. At its core it is the story of two sisters who find not only themselves when they go to an artist's retreat, but also what it means to be sisters. It is also a fairy tale told in the modern world. Howard writes beautifully and with such talent that I can't wait to see her next offering to the fantasy world. - Karena

The Wangs vs. the World by Jade Chang

I love a good road trip story. There is something about being trapped in a vehicle with others that forces us to not only examine who we are as people, but also to confront the complicated threads that bind us to others. In The Wangs vs. the World, Chang explores one family’s tumultuous relationships with both humor and empathy. This is Chang’s debut novel and I am definitely looking forward to more by her. - Karena

The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden

This debut novel, reminiscent of Nnedi Okorafor, is a fresh and welcome addition to the SFF genre. The South African setting and combination of gods and technology in the world of The Prey of Gods will pique any reader’s interest. “Draydon weaves an engaging story that’s populated by a diverse cast and enhanced by fascinating concepts.” —Publishers Weekly - Karena

Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler

It took me until my thirties to really appreciate characters who don’t have everything together, and Tess is certainly one of those characters. Her experience working in an elite New York City restaurant is adrenaline filled—a rock star lifestyle. This is an intense read that will forever change the way you see restaurants. - Karena

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

This book broke my heart, put it back together, then repeated the process, in the best way possible. Homegoing follows two sisters and their descendants for 200 years, from Ghana to the United States, with some of the most powerful writing in the last few years. - Karena
