The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte

Like any scientific discipline, paleontology is continually evolving: Breakthroughs are being made and new fossils are being uncovered. Brusatte does an excellent job of packaging the latest knowledge of the field in engaging and accessible prose. Written less like a textbook and more like a narrative, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs starts at the beginning of the time of dinosaurs and works forward in chronological order, travelling the globe as it does so. From the tiniest microraptor to the mighty titanosaurs, this book offers plenty of fodder for all the dinosaur enthusiasts out there. - Jade

Unthinkable by Helen Thomson

Have you ever imagined what your life would be like if you could remember everything that ever happened to you? Or perhaps how it would feel to be lost all the time? Inspired by Oliver Sacks and driven by her fascination with the human brain, Thomson travels the world to meet with and intimately interview people with these and a slew of other mind-boggling conditions. Thomson takes a gentle and thoughtful approach as she explores some of the strangest minds known to science. Her insights may have you questioning your own physical reality. - Jade

Upheaval by Jared Diamond

In his latest work, Diamond chose seven countries that have had major crises within the last 150 years and examines how they’ve dealt with those crises. He then extrapolates from how those countries have evolved since to examine the state of the world today and to project how our future might unfold. Diamond has tackled several broad, complex, and sensitive topics here with the same intelligent and accessible writing that has made his earlier book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, an enduring classic. Part history lesson, part editorial, and part science lecture, I found this to be a truly fascinating read that should become required reading. - Jade

Impossible Owls by Brian Phillips

This quirky, clever essay collection showcases an impressive variety of topics. Part travelogue, part memoir, and part investigative journalism, Phillips applies his sense of humor and keen observations throughout the work. Phillips’ writing is reminiscent of David Sedaris, but with less snark and more heart. - Jade

The Best American Food Writing 2018 edited by Ruth Reichl

This compilation of essays transcends the stereotypical expectation that food writing has to be light, fluffy, and simple. While there is plenty of gastronomical content, the topics covered here range from feminism, to body image, to politics, to race. The depth and importance of this book, and the effect that it had on me, far exceeded my expectations. - Jade

American Overdose by Chris McGreal

The opioid crisis has recently received considerable coverage in the media nation-wide. However, it is not in any way, a new phenomenon, and for years, a great effort was expended to obscure its severity. McGreal’s investigative journalism reads like true crime and the story he tells is tragic, common, and ongoing. - Jade

The White Darkness by David Grann

Killers of the Flower Moon author David Grann’s latest book chronicles the journey of modern polar explorer Henry Worsley, who attempted a solo traverse of Antarctica in 2015. Grann’s account of Worsley’s arduous expedition—and the expeditions of the explorers who came before him—offers chilling insights into the ruthless reality of polar exploration. I was both fascinated by the extreme lengths that people will go to realize their dream and reminded of the remarkable endurance that humans are capable of. - Jade

Dear America by Jose Antonio Vargas

Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas didn’t know he was an undocumented immigrant until he went to get his driver’s license at the age of 16. Vargas’s story is sadly not unusual, which is part of why it’s so important. His writing is emotional, powerful, and full of purpose. More memoir than political statement, Dear America is a truly eye-opening look at the realities of immigration in America. - Jade
