Grand Canyon by Jason Chin

A father and daughter break down their creekside campsite, stow gear, and climb out of the Inner Gorge and up through layer after layer of ancient rock formations and ecosystems to the top of the Grand Canyon. Jason Chin’s clear, scenic watercolors and detailed text give us a sense of geological time, which (though illustrated with scientific specificity) seems in fact magical. Grades 1–4. - Ga

Town Is by the Sea by Joanne Schwartz, illus. by Sydney Smith

“From my house, I can see the sea. It goes like this—house, road, grassy cliff, sea.” In a 1950s coastal mining town, a boy will follow his father’s footsteps. His ambivalence is mirrored in the stunning illustrations of the dark coal mine, which supports his family, and the light, shining sea. Text and pictures (watercolors, a bit of gouache, and delicate, strokey bold ink) harmonize in a rare and lovely way. Grades 1–4. - Ga

The Purloining of Prince Oleomargarine by Mark Twain and Phillip E. Stead, illus. by Erin Stead

Those droll, amusing, Caldecott-winning Steads have gone off the deep end again in the loveliest of ways. What happens in this contemporary fairy tale—morphing from fragments of a fairy tale Mark Twain told his daughters—I’m not absolutely certain. But it happens so delightfully, so beguilingly, you will be dazzled. (It’s particularly nice when the author Stead argues with the author Twain about the text.) And dazzling too are Erin Stead’s illustrations (woodblock, ink, and pencil). She has a light, whimsical touch, oddly solid, that you can utterly count on. Grades 2 and up. - Ga

Three of the world’s great religions—Islam, Christianity, and Judaism—are motivated by the same single tenet: treat others as you wish to be treated. When I’m asked for a book on manners, an anti-bullying book, or for that first discussion for a child inquiring about different religions, this book caps the stack. Ages 7 & up. - Ga

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

During the Second World War, the Russians torpedoed and sunk the Wilhelm Gustloff with 10,582 passengers on board. More than 9400 died in the cold Baltic Sea, including 5000 children. This little-known maritime disaster is impeccably researched and viscerally conveyed through the stories of four adults, slowly revealed in alternating chapters in Sepetys’ haunting historical fiction. Why do we read about disasters? Perhaps to illumine our character—our most base and our best tendencies. And because it is important here, as well, to not forget. Ages 14 & up.  —GA
