The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling

Eerie in the best way with character relationships so well developed you forget the novel is pared down to just two voices. The Luminous Dead follows Gyre's solo journey through empty caves in deep space, with only the voice of her handler over the coms as back-up. Of course neither Gyre nor her handler are as they initially appear, and are the caves truly empty? Starling plays with universal human fears to ratchet up the tension for thrills and chills. - Clara

Liquid Rules by Mark Miodownik

Miodownik is back with the same delightful formula as Stuff Matters, my all-time favorite material sciences book. This book tackles liquids: the unstable, ever-changing force in our lives. Each chapter is framed around a liquid experienced onboard an airplane. From jet fuel to complementary tea to display screens (yes, liquid too!), this is for the daydreamer fascinated by the world around them. - Clara

Leading Men by Christopher Castellani

This is historical fiction at its voyeuristic, psychological and penetrating best. Tennessee Williams and his lover Frank Merlo go to Italy in 1953 for a party at Truman Capote's villa. The web of friendships, adventure, love, and betrayal is gorgeous and heartbreaking. Frank's emotional journey is one of the most evocative and nuanced in recent literature. - Clara

Get in Trouble by Kelly Link

Kelly Link has seduced me into loving short stories. These stories are fantastical, insightful, and such a punch to the gut. There's no limits placed by genre or subject matter, the thoroughfare is Link's ability to tap into every one of your secret longings and carefully lay them bare on the page. Surprising and fascinating! - Clara

Full Fathom Five by Max Gladstone

Come for the necromantic-urban-space-lawyer-priests, stay for the twisty plots and hard-core women. This is the 3rd/5th book in the sequence (don't ask), but also completely readable as a standalone. The world building is endlessly cool. Soul is the universal currency that feeds coins, idol-gods, and the stock market, but how much of your soul can you give away? - Clara

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

Merricat and Constance Blackwood may or may not have poisoned their entire family last year. Hated by the town, the sisters are slowly entombed in their rambling mansion with their infirm Uncle Julian. Jackson is at her chilling, disturbing best in this paean to the haunted house. Tension builds as the characters become subtly more unhinged, horrific, and, worst of all, relatable. - Clara

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

I hesistate to tell you anything about the plot of this book because it absolutely should not work. And yet, it is one of the most touching, charming, and romantic books I've ever read. It’s a neurodiverse, feel-good, feminist rom-com. Take a break from the stress of life and immerse yourself in this smart, sexy fantasy. - Clara

A More Beautiful and Terrible History by Jeanne Theoharis

Theoharis established herself as the writer of the long civil rights era (extending our views of the historical forces and outcomes of the civil rights movement beyond the small window of the 1960s). In this book she explores how the legacy of civil rights has been reshaped, used, and invoked to paint a fuller picture of national identity and where the struggle for equality is headed. - Clara

Europe: A Natural History by Tim Flannery

So sharp! I feel like I laughed out loud every paragraph. Flannery looks at the Europe’s unique roles as a bridge between continents, analyzing paleontology, geology, botany, anthropology and more. Europe couldn't be as funny as it is without a backbone of research. Centuries of scholarship are translated with an irreverent wit that brings the past alive. Absolutely delightful reading. - Clara

Utopia for Realists by Rutger Bregman

I had to get my hands on this after seeing Bregman's clear, assured take-downs of wealth inequality at Davos and on Tucker Carlson. His vision for a modern utopia where technological advancements benefit humans rather than oppress them includes universal basic income, a 15 hour workweek, and open borders. This radical, ambitious, and knowledgeable plan is a must read! - Clara
