The Poet by Michael Connelly

I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend, when I was terribly sick and wanted a distraction. It had everything I needed and more: an inventive and well-structured plot, lively characters, twists, turns and plummets, and a seriously creepy murder mystery. I also loved that the protagonist is a journalist, which gives the book a fresh take on your average whodunit.

Heft by Liz Moore

I was swept up by this novel. It is one of the finest pieces of character work I've encountered, the kind of book that nests in the back of your mind and ruffles its feathers from time to time. It's the story of Arthur Opp, a professor who has exiled himself from the world for ten years, and the sudden intrusion into his life that brings him back. Hopeful but never sacchrine.

Women and Ghosts by Alison Lurie

I'm obsessed with ghost stories, and this collection is one of my favorite discoveries. It would not be a stretch to call this a book of feminist ghost stories - they center around women who are struggling with domestic duties, troublesome families, and romantic relationships old and new. I have an awful feeling it will go out of print before long, so grab your copy while you can.

The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger

This book reminds me of The Marriage Plot by Eugenides - both novels are concerned with marriage, obviously, but there's something about the slow unfolding of these characters and their relationships that brings Eugenides' fiction to mind. Don’t miss this quiet gem of a novel.

A panoply of humanity, from struggling farmers, to conmen and cowboys, to the heart-of-gold businessman, and the Company threatening to end it all. If Not, Winter by Sappho

The only female classic poet whose work we have any part of, Sappho distinguishes herself beyond gender, time, and space for the extreme beauty and passion of her work. presents Sappho in the pieces and gaps we’ve discovered, the Greek parallel to English translation- the best way to discover Sappho’s haunting words.

Paper Towns by John Green

It’s the adventure we all wish we’d had in high school: the attractive, elusive crush finally focused on you, only you, a night of epic, illicit pranks, discoveries and revelations that must be the start of something life-changing…but then you wake up and they’re gone. A deep mystery of searching for another and finding yourself, with the camaraderie that can only be found in youth.

Incognito by Ed Brubaker

One of my favorite riffs on the super-hero/villain genre, without the capes and colors and cartoons. A wonderful noir tale of a super villain in the witness protection program, and the powers competing for his knowledge, his life, and the secrets that he doesn’t know he holds. A fantastic, self-contained story of redemption, fatal(é) love, and the difference between good & evil.

The Yoga Club by Cooper Lawrence

They seem to be marketing this as fiction, but I'd call it a mystery. And you'll learn a lot more about Greenwich and NYC society than you will about yoga. This book is fun from the first paragraph. For example, here's Coco considering a guest at a Greenwich Halloween party:‘The overly tie-dyed shirt said "costume" but the David Crosby-style goatee and smell of patchouli said "lifestyle."’

Selected Stories by Fritz Leiber

Holy smokes of Lankhmar, Fafhrd! These are stories to die for. If you thought the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories were the only great things Leiber ever wrote then you have another read coming. He pretty much invented urban horror and was ripping the advertising industry a new larynx way before Adbusters. Plus an enlightening intro by Neil Gaiman.
