The Stockholm Octavo by Karen Engelmann

This book has everything: intrigue, adventure, romance, and enough twists and turns to keep even the most restless mind occupied. Emil Larson stands on the cusp of history, and he’ll either get everything he’s ever wanted, or he’ll lose his wits, his fortune, and even his life, as the city itself stands on the brink of ruin or revolution, depending on how you read the cards. A delicious and satisfying read.

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

I found and loved this book last winter, and as soon as the temperature drops I know I’ll want to read it again and again. It’s a gorgeous retelling of that classic fairy tale in which a childless woodcutter and his wife make a girl out of snow who miraculously comes to life overnight. Ivey’s incredible gift for storytelling breathes new life both into the characters and into her fittingly chosen backdrop of the 1920s Alaskan wilderness. The line between reality and magic gives this lovely novel a sense of the fantastic while making every moment believable enough to make your heart ache.

The News from Spain by Joan Wickersham

The News from Spain is a shockingly good read, a collection of graceful, compact stories that explore love as it honestly is: messy and shifting, overwhelming and strange. I longed to inhabit these small, deftly formed worlds far longer than their page counts allowed. Wickersham is now one of my favorite fiction writers—I am in awe of her ability to tease so much emotion from the simplest of sentences, and I’m certain we’ll be seeing more from her in the future.

Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

Dennis Lehane’s new novel revolves around a Prohibition-era gangster in the Roaring Twenties, following his rise from petty thief to the biggest and best rum runner in Florida. If you’re already a fan of Lehane’s stellar writing or of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, you’ll get caught up in this atmospheric novel, which Publishers Weekly (in a starred review) calls “a quintessentially American story that will appeal to readers of literary and crime fiction alike.”
