Mystery & Suspense from the 2014 Winter Newsletter

These titles were featured in our 2014 Winter Newsletter.

Angel Killer by Andrew Mayne

When I started this mystery about a magician (think Houdini) turned FBI agent I thought: fast, fun read. It is, but I hadn’t expected it to also be clever, funny, and well written. Our heroine, the resourceful Jessica Blackwood, is interesting and likeable, and the magician angle is refreshingly different. Light on gore while rife with illusionist tricks, this intriguing mystery is great for anyone. I can’t wait for book two!

Bones Never Lie by Kathy Reichs

I love Kathy Reichs’ heroine, Temperance Brennan, a tough, brilliant forensic anthropologist who will stop at nothing to catch killers. Although I’d only ever read the first book in the series before this, I was able to slip into the story easily and enjoy every page. As an actual forensic anthropologist, Reichs knows her subject well, and is quite a good writer. This is a tense thriller that kept me guessing till the very end.

The Monogram Murders by Sophie Hannah

For the first time ever, the guardians of Agatha Christie’s legacy have approved a brand-new novel featuring her most beloved creation, Hercule Poirot.

“Equal parts charming and ingenious, dark and quirky and utterly engaging….I was thrilled to see Poirot in such very, very good hands. Reading The Monogram Murders was like returning to a favorite room of a long-lost home.” —Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

Blackmail, My Love by Katie Gilmartin

There are very few books that come as perfectly packaged as this one: Queer history, San Francisco, and a blackmail scam that goes all the way to the top are all wrapped around our genderfluid protagonist, Josie. Gilmartin leads us on a walking tour of queer SF, from the Castro to Fulton Street. If you love noir, Bay Area history (Santa Cruz gets a nod, too), and queers bashing back against police brutality, take a peek inside.

Wait for Signs by Craig Johnson

Craig Johnson’s books about Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire are my favorite ongoing mystery series. In this new collection of short stories, Johnson highlights part of the reason his sparse, well-crafted mysteries are so good: his dry sense of humor and his endlessly interesting, complex characters. I loved this collection, as will other fans. And if you haven’t discovered the superb Longmire books yet, start with his first, The Cold Dish—you won’t regret it!

Belfast Noir edited by Adrian McKinty

I am not exaggerating when I say that Belfast Noir is the best book of short stories I’ve read in years. My single complaint is that I desperately wanted every one of these stories to be a novel. This collection explores Belfast’s confusing, illogical landscape of loyalties, feuds, and blood-soaked landmarks. If you are among the ranks of Adrian McKinty fans in Santa Cruz, you must have this book.

The Bones of Paris by Laurie R. King

If you’ve never branched out from Laurie King’s beloved Mary Russell series, I heartily recommend her Stuyvesant & Grey books, set in the interwar years. The second in this sequence follows a U.S. Bureau of Investigation agent and his search for a missing woman among a dangerous crowd of artists obsessed with horror and death. King’s deftly woven words will transport you to the summery streets of Paris—and to all the darkness that lies beneath them.

Malice by Keigo Higashino

Keigo Higashino surprised me with his last two books, and here he continues to impress. Malice, a twisting mystery that deftly switches viewpoints, is the first book in Higashino’s longest-running and most acclaimed series, which is finally being brought to the United States. Police Detective Kyochiro Kaga investigates when a best-selling novelist is found brutally murdered in his home on the night before he’s planning to leave Japan and relocate to Vancouver. This is an author worth watching.
