The Yard by Alex Grecian

Set in London right after the reign of Jack the Ripper, this novel has Walter Day— newly hired on at Scotland Yard—trying to solve the murder of a fellow detective. Afraid that they face a new Ripper and still suffering from low public opinion, the whole squad struggles with the possibility of a new type of criminal—the serial killer. Rich with historic details and full of tantalizing action, this is a fascinating look at the very start of modern police investigation—and the start of modern crime.

Among Others by Jo Walton

Morganna was a twin, and now she’s not. She was a whole person, and now she’s not. She was happy, and now she’s not. The twins grew up with magic, taught to them by fairies most children grow out of. Something bad happened, and now Mor is alone, crippled in a strange place, and desperately lonely. This book is as much about the mysteries of being a teenage girl, and the magic of books, as it is of magic.

Animal Man V.1 by Jeff Lemire

Buddy Baker is a vegetarian and animal rights activist; a former stunt-man turned actor; a bemused hipster icon; and a father and husband—a family man. Also—though this is somewhat embarrassing for him to admit—he is sometimes a super hero. Animal Man is the perfect blend of horror and humanity, the explorations of family relationships and individual ambitions right alongside horrific visions of monsters and madmen—both threatening the innocent, and those inside of ourselves.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Nick and Amy are unhappily married, and when Amy disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary, leaving behind a string of clues and signs of a struggle, suspicion falls on Nick. As days go by and a tabloid frenzy grows, Nick appears more and more guilty…almost too guilty. A book of masterful twists, uncomfortably real characters and moody wit—I can’t imagine a better beach read.

Carte Blanche by Carlo Lucarelli

It's April, 1945. Fascist Italy is on its last legs, and everyone is scrambling to save their own fortunes—or skins. Enter the enigmatic figure of Commissario DeLuca, who, though an ordinary policeman, has previously been employed by some dubious characters of the crumbling regime. All he wants to do is solve an ordinary murder. But that may be too much to ask. The first of an acclaimed trilogy.

Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig

Miriam is a drifter with a strange gift: when she touches someone for the first time, she sees a vision of how they will die. She has mostly used this gift to scavenge the victim's cash by being there at the right moment—because she is always right. But when she shakes hands with a friendly truck driver and foresees that the last word he utters is her name, her bitter, opportunistic attitude may have to change. Dark, sharp, and really well-written.

War for the Oaks by Emma Bull

For Eddi, music is life. Unfortunately, life isn’t going so great right now, and that’s before she finds herself involved in a faerie war. Now, whether she wants to or not, she has a pivotal role to play in the conflict, and the outcome may rest on her shoulders. This is a fantastic tale–dark, lyrical, funny and tough. Fans of Gaiman and de Lint will love this tale of war and music.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

The existence of magic does not make Grossman’s dysphoric characters any more capable of dealing their own unhappiness. This book perfectly so captures the soul crushing ennui of emotional purposelessness; I want to hate Quentin and his pals, but there is too much of myself in there to do so. Littered with Narnia and Harry Potter homages, The Magicians is a realist take on the magical world.
