The End We Start From by Megan Hunter

Megan Hunter is a new force to be reckoned with and celebrated. In her beautiful, spare novel, climate crisis floodwaters force an exodus of London and we follow the story of one woman, her husband R, and her newborn son Z, as it is laid out in poetic captures, each word carefully placed. This is a haunting exploration of motherhood, its foreignness, its innate strength, and its parallels to survival in an upturned land. - Melinda

Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich

Having binge-watched the television adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, coupled with current politics, I swore off dystopian stories for the time being just so I could catch my breath. Until, of course, I caught word that my favorite author’s new title was just that. Future Home of the Living God tells the story of one woman, Cedar, who at four months pregnant, is suddenly thrown into a fight for survival when the state of genetic evolution starts to reverse itself. Plants and animals are reproducing species that have long been extinct and there are whispers that the children being born aren’t surviving or if they are, something is very wrong with them. The government responds by gathering genetic data and institutionalizing pregnant women. As Cedar’s pregnancy progresses, we watch the journey that she must endure to protect her unborn child. While this genre is a departure for Erdrich, Future Home of the Living God explores themes familiar to her other books, examining self-identity, loyalty, and the importance of redemption within family. This is a taut and intense whirlwind of a read—whew. - S.M.C.

Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan

Manhattan Beach is stunning. Read the first page and sigh with immense pleasure at having started something magnificent. Set in Brooklyn around the Great Depression and WWII, we follow young Anna Kerrigan, one of the first female Naval Yard divers, as she seeks to unravel her father’s mysterious disappearance. This may seem a straightforward historical novel, but with Egan’s peerless writing and keen emotional intelligence, it plumbs the depths of human will, connection, and reinvention. - Melinda

Fresh Complaint: Stories by Jeffrey Eugenides

Eugenides is one of those great old-timey writers, like Tolstoy or Dickens, who tell big, sweeping stories that somehow still feel specific and intimate to his characters, and he does it with compassion and a sad-funny tone that keeps you glued to the page. Though he’s been publishing for almost 25 years, somehow we’re only now getting his first collection of short fiction. As a huge fan of his two previous novels, Middlesex and The Marriage Plot, I can’t wait to see what he does with the shorter form. - Rico

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman

This prequel to Hoffman’s ever-beloved Practical Magic traces the adolescent years of the three Owens siblings—the descendants of a witch and a witch-hunter—as they discover their secret, feared ancestral gift. What begins with whimsical wishes and parlor tricks spirals into the manifestation of the Owens’ curse: to their bloodline, falling in love is fatal. Hoffman’s quick storytelling is as delightful as ever, mystical yet light-footed, weaving family lore into the teens’ journeys of self-acceptance. - Julia

theMystery.doc by Matthew McIntosh

theMystery.doc feels like a publishing moment, a novel that pushes the boundaries of its form in a profound and personal way. Despite the page count, it’s a quick read and is compelling in its artful collaboration of text, images, movie frames, web searches, messages, and more. At its heart is a man who wakes to find his memory gone and his unfinished novel a blank screen saved as theMystery.doc. It is that, and so much more. - Melinda

Smile by Roddy Doyle

Roddy Doyle is best known for the engaging dialogue that permeates the pages of his perfect Irish novels. Smile, his latest novel, is no exception. Except with this work, the playful Irish banter not only serves to transport you to the Irish pubs where recently divorced Victor Forde finds himself confronting his adolescence and current sense of belonging, it also leads you to question everything you just read once you turn the last page. - Casey

Hiddensee by Gregory Maguire

I adore the Nutcracker ballet and even have a collection of Christmas nutcrackers, so I’m beyond excited that Gregory Maguire, master of fairy tale reinvention, has turned his nimble mind to crafting a backstory for the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker! I can’t wait to see what magic he works on this beloved tale and what poignancy he scatters through it—delights waiting to be savored like the sweetmeats cracked from a nut. - Flannery

The Revolution of Marina M. by Janet Fitch

To grow up in the midst of a violent revolution, especially with the soul of a poet, is to be forever marked. Marina comes from a well-off Russian family. Her life is also poised on the edge of the Russian Revolution. This is a story of passion, betrayal, and revolt. I was utterly drawn in by Marina’s story and read it on the edge of my seat. - Ivy
