Bird Box by Josh Malerman

A young mother embarks on a harrowing journey in a post-apocalyptic world to search for a safer place for her family. An unknowable evil lurks outside the window, and just one glimpse can lead to total madness — or a gruesome death. I read this in one sitting because I was too terrified to put it down. Malerman relentlessly ratchets up the tension. - Kelly

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

This is my favorite YA novel of the year. Dark, gripping, and refreshingly unique, it blew me away. Complex characters from all walks of life inhabit this rich, fully imagined world, and their relationships give the story heart and soul. Filled with romance, intrigue, and magic, the book revolves around a thrilling heist. I absolutely loved it!

Seveneves by Neal Stephenson

Seveneves is part disaster novel, part Science Fiction. It starts with the heart-stopping moment when the moon explodes and takes us through a rough and tumble ride to save the human race. It is an epic that spans thousands of years and takes many surprising turns along the way. It is definitely one I recommend.

The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma

Set in Nigeria in the mid-1990s, this terrific debut tells the story of four brothers whose fortunes change for the worse when their father takes a job in a faraway city. The plot feels as solid and classic as something out of the Old Testament--an African version of Cain-and-Abel--and the writing is unique, creating tension in oblique and unexpected ways. I found this a profound and moving reading experience.

Dietland by Sarai Walker

Plum anticipates the awesome life she imagines will materialize after her weight-loss surgery. Then her happenstance encounters with a strange woman lead her to Calliope House, where the daughter of a deceased diet mogul looking to make amends folds her into a subculture of radical feminists rallying against the diet-industrial complex. This book is truly exceptional.

Purity by Jonathan Franzen

If there was still any doubt that Jonathan Franzen is the best living American novelist, this book crushes it. In addition to the wide array of great characters, unsurpassed erudition, and astounding prose that we've come to expect from him, Purity offers a globe-spanning plot. I laughed, I squirmed, and I gasped, but mostly I stayed up into the wee hours greedily turning pages.

The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth

While all novels work to transport the reader across time and space, none do so quite like Paul Kingsnorth’s The Wake. Set in England shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066, and written in a created language that is a mix of Old and Modern English, reading The Wake is like being immersed in a foreign country where you have an elementary command of the native language, but soon find yourself speaking (or rather, reading) fluently—to your own amazement.  --Aric

The Complete Stories by Clarice Lispector

For a certain kind of reader this collection of short stories by Brazil’s greatest author may be the book of the year…decade…or century. Every story in here is a kind of spell as she infuses comic and existential significance into the seemingly mundane lives, loves and dreams of her characters. It’s definitely one of my favorite books of the year.

Young Skins by Colin Barrett

Set in a dismal, semi-rural town in the west of Ireland where jobs are few but boredom and idiotic drunken violence are plentiful, this brilliant collection of stories reads like the love child of Dubliners and the first Arctic Monkeys album. Barrett's protagonists are young, male and lost, with dim prospects. He explores their physical and emotional terrain with precise, slightly arch prose filled with spot-on descriptions and fresh turns of phrase. A single collection might be too small a sample size to add Barrett's name to the list of great Irish short-story writers, but Young Skins is one hell of a strong opening argument.

The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks

Ever a master of historical fiction, Geraldine Brooks delves into the life of King David, as seen through the eyes of those closest to him: his jealous brother, his weary mother, his bitter wife, and his loyal prophet, Natan. David asks Natan to document his life, not through glorification, but “to be known as a man.” I was enraptured by the beautiful writing, inspired by the strong female characters, thrilled by the battles, and empowered by the ending.
