Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

Life After Life is the strangest and sharpest novel I’ve read this year. The central character, Ursula, dies and is repeatedly reborn throughout her long and complicated life. It’s rather like reincarnation, but she always comes back as herself. It’s when she begins to remember details from her past “lives,” and use them to survive, that this book really takes off.

In Love With a Wicked Man by Liz Carlyle

All the things! All of 'em! I really loved this book. The heroine is a wonderfully self-possessed woman, and the set up that lets her be so is fairly novel. The storyline has good twists and the romance seemed very believable with good realistic issues and not-so-outrageous solutions. And it was spicy, with a hint of danger, and a good dose of family drama thrown in.

Children of the Jacaranda Tree by Sahar Delijani

Reading Delijani's novel is like peeping into the living rooms of families torn apart by revolution and political strife. Three generations try to hold their lives together, to find and sustain love, to support their families, to heal from unspeakable wounds, and to live with unthinkable absences. It is a deeply moving story of life, death, persecution, and survival.

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

I adored this wonderfully quirky love story. Professor Don Tillman’s systematic, rational procedure for finding a wife is totally thrown off kilter by the entrance of Rosie. This is a genuinely feel good book — it won’t put your emotions through the paces and force cathartic epiphanies, but may expand your understand of those whose brain works just a little bit differently.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

Sometimes, when I come across a particularly good line in a book I'm reading, I will look up and read that line to whoever's standing around. The problem with The Goldfinch is that every line is like that: tenderly crafted, shining with detail, bringing me to tears. It's a phenomenal story about friendship, loss, and art theft; and it's the new standard to which all of my future favorite books will be held.

Redshirts by John Scalzi

Scalzi does it again in this Hugo award winning novel! Ensign Dahl notices something odd about the starship Intrepid: the away missions have a surprisingly high mortality rate. His search for the truth leads his crew on a quest through time, space and literal plot holes. Hilarious and fun with a surprising amount of heart, this is great for fans of Star Trek or anyone who likes sci-fi.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

There are memories that everyone has from their childhood that feel so real but are too fantastic to be fact. Except sometimes, they are real. Gaiman perfectly captures that sense of danger and wonder that are so inherent to childhood, while adding his trademark folk/fairy tale twist. Dreamlike, beautiful and evocative, this makes a wonderful gift for newbies and fans of Gaiman alike!

Shadows by Robin McKinley

Every so often, you read a book that gives you exactly what you’re looking for at a given moment. Origami, magic, ridiculously cute dogs and the quest to accept and overcome the unbearable were what I needed, and this book has them all. McKinley’s superb crafting will appeal to teens and adults alike, reminding us that nothing is ever as simple or as ordinary as it seems.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

I was sick of vampires, but since this was written by the talented Holly Black, I had to give it a try, and I’m glad I did. Set in a world where vampires live in ghettos called Coldtowns and their parties stream live online, and featuring a fierce, smart and dedicated heroine, Black’s graceful writing and sheer originality cleanse away the glittery romance of vampirism.

The Golem & the Jinni by Helene Wecker

It begins in 1918 New York as two mythical creatures, a golem and a jinni, awaken to find themselves rather out of place. This is both a lovely, detailed work of historical fiction, and a complex tale of self-discovery and friendship, redemption and revenge, and, of course, magic – both the fantastic and the everyday. A truly lovely, utterly satisfying novel.
