2011 Nonfiction Staff Favorites

Our staff picked out these titles as their favorite nonfiction books released in 2011.

Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff

Almost too unbelievable to be true, this action adventure story is a
great page turner. Zuckoff balances thorough reporting with dramatic
retelling as he present the story of plane-crash survivors and the
isolated indigenous tribe members they encounter. While it must have
been a harrowing experience for those involved, the happy-ending of
their trials and the immense readability of the writing make this an
easy and entertaining read.

Bossypants by Tina Fey

I was almost late to work multiple times because Tina Fey is just so wet-your-pants funny. Not only is this a great book--full of pointed humor, witty observations, and less-than-helpful suggestions--but the audio version puts it all in her voice and her cadence. She's a brilliant comedian and an acute social observer—you should totally take her advice. –Nici

Go the F*ck To Sleep by Adam Mansbach

Every parent across the world can relate to this short and sweet missive on the beauties and terrors of a cranky kid. My favorite line? “The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest, and the creatures who crawl, run and creep. I know you’re not thirsty. That’s bullsh*t. Stop lying. Lie the f*ck down, my darling and sleep.” A must for every new parent on your holiday list.

Pattern Magic 2 by Tomoko Nakamichi

Part mathematics, part origami, part sheer innovation—Pattern Magic 2 is simplicity in design at its best. As the author says, “unexpected shapes and forms can be converted into flat patterns and ultimately into garments…patterns are like documents that describe a garment, conveying its structure more eloquently than words.”
