Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

As a fan of the genre, I know the search for a satisfying mystery can leave you sifting through blurbs that end up sounding somewhat samey. This one is an ingenious mix of Christie-style English village murder and contemporary publishing thriller that scratches the itch whether you're an avid mystery reader or just an occasional one. I truly found it hard to put down! - Ilana

The Half-Drowned King by Linnea Hartsuyker

This is epic historical fiction in line with fantasy favorites like A Game of Thrones and Half a King. Brother and sister duo Ragnvald and Svanhild are smack dab in the middle of a web of allegiances, ambitions and revenge. Hartsuyker reimagines the Viking sagas with deeply personal struggles amidst an environment of violence and shifting tides. - Clara

An American Childhood by Annie Dillard

This memoir is an ode to clever, curious girls who strain against the path. Dillard approached childhood with a furious joy, consuming everything her quiet upbringing offered with an infectious vitality. "I read some few books with such reverence," Dillard writes, "I didn't close them at the finish, but only moved the pile of pages back to the start." I felt the same. - Katherine

The Last Season by Eric Blehm

Randy Morgenson spent 28 seasons as a backcountry ranger, helping countless hikers—some lost, some hungry, some hurt—find their way back to civilization. When he himself disappeared, fellow rangers began a desperate search to find him. Well-researched and written with the urgency of a murder mystery, this is one of the best books about the outdoors you’ll ever read. - Rico

The Rise and Fall of Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte

Any book about dinosaurs immediately goes into my to be read pile. I pleased to find that this narrative was incredibly humorous, light, and anecdotal. You’ll learn interesting facts about dinosaurs in addition to getting a glimpse into life as a paleontologist. If you’re looking for a non-fic read that’s informative but also has a friendly narrative give this one a shot. - Rechelle

Temper by Nicky Drayden

Temper is a tale both harrowing and humorous about the adventures of twin brothers who battle their demons, literally and figuratively, in a culture where a person’s worth is determined by the virtues and vices assigned to them as a child. A craving for blood along with lechery, deceit, and vanity run rampant through a vividly imagined world in this dark fantasy that is riddled with mysteries and secrets at every surprising turn. - Trey

Look for Her by Emily Winslow

Jane Doe January was the stunning memoir which first hooked me on Emily Winslow's work. As a mystery writer, Winslow delivers! Look For Her orbits the era-defining case of a missing girl from the 70’s. Winslow’s nonlinear narrative builds intense psychological suspense, a cold-case mystery with new threat of active violence, which wraps up neatly into a satisfying, divine-able yet unexpected bow. One of a series, this is also an ideal standalone summer read. - a.c.

Wicked and the Wallflower by Sarah MacLean

This is Sarah MacLean at her very best. She has a talent for showing you the side of Regency England that others decide to skip. She illustrates the difference in worlds between the nobility and the seedier side of London with an eye for detail and an understanding for what readers want. Felicity and Devil have an amazing dynamic and whip-smart dialogue. I am absolutely in love with her side characters and can’t wait for their stories. - Karena

Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian

I've long been a fan of Cat Sebastian's  queer historical romances and wondered about her transition to Avon. I should never have feared, this book is everything I could have hoped for! Both of the protagonists are unique for the genre (bisexual protagonist! nonbinary protagonist!!) but more than that they're compelling and complicated enough to keep you from anticipating all the twists and turns. This was a wonderful romance and a wonderful read. - Clara

The Turtle of Oman by Naomi Shihab Nye

His family is packing up for a 3-year stint in America, but Aref isn’t ready to leave his Oman home or his grandfather, Sidi. The bond between grandparent and child is a stalwart of children’s literature, and this novel quietly but surely evokes the classic theme against a sensuously rendered landscape that feels like home.
