I Might Regret This by Abbi Jacobson

Abbi Jacobson (of Broad City fame) set off on a solo road trip from New York City to Los Angeles in an impulsive attempt to shake off heartache from a breakup. This quietly introspective and sweetly self-deprecating essay collection brings readers along on Jacobson’s cross-country trek and shows us that we’re never too old to figure out who we are. The raw honesty and startling vulnerability of this book took me by surprise, inspiring me to take stock of my own path. - Kelly

Unsavory Truth by Marion Nestle

Is chocolate heart-healthy? Does yogurt prevent type 2 diabetes? Do pomegranates help cheat death? News headlines bombard us with such amazing claims. They are reported as science and have dramatic effects on what we eat. In her new book, food expert Marion Nestle (Food Politics, What to Eat), explains how these studies are more about marketing than science, why it’s time to put public health first, and what we can do to make that happen. “Marion Nestle is a national treasure. She has the courage to take on multinational corporations and the wisdom to separate the facts from the spin.” ―—Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation

Red Moon by Kim Stanley Robinson

Given Robinson’s pedigree, there was little doubt I would like this book. If you enjoy intrigue and action in the low gravity of our closest neighbor, Red Moon will draw you in. Despite the lightness of the setting, it pulls its weight. Similar to last year’s Artemis. - Ian

Transcription by Kate Atkinson

While World War II isn’t my usual era of interest, Juliet’s hilarious inner monologue about everything that happens around her won me over. There is espionage and intrigue, and twists and turns emerge where you least expect them. I can see the 1940s so clearly, thanks to Atkinson’s fantastic writing. This is a book that will be a hit for a lot of different kinds of readers: people who like historical fiction, mystery, or literary fiction. - Karena

In the House in the Dark of the Woods by Laird Hunt

Gothic and atmospheric, this book is a terrifying fever dream, an extended waking nightmare. It follows Goody, our unreliable narrator, as she gets lost in the woods and discovers what lies beyond the veil. Lurking behind Laird Hunt’s lush and evocative prose is a sense of dread that creeps up your spine as the story twists and writhes. It’s a haunted-woods tale full of wolves and witches—the brutal kind who eat children and steal your very soul. A perfect and easy-to-devour book to usher in Halloween or give you a fright any time of the year. Just be sure to read it with all the lights on. - Kelly

The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner

I am so freaking excited for this book! I love folk tales, and this one is particularly rooted in the Jewish folklore it is drawn from. I hope you, like me, will be eagerly anticipating the book the acclaimed Madeline Miller praised so highly, calling it, “...a gripping, powerful story of family, sisterhood, and two young women trying to find their way in the world.” Sure to appeal to fans of Bear and the Nightingale and Spinning Silver, two of my absolute faves, I can’t wait to get my hands on it! - Jax

The Dinosaur Artist by Paige Williams

While the Jurassic Park franchise has shown us what we're all missing out on by not bringing giant carnivores back to life, the real drama is in the bones (and its recent shenanigans! Like, just six years ago!) International fossil laws are comprised of many grey areas and limited means of reinforcing said laws, which allows discreet black market exploitation to happen. Key word: discreet. The situations surrounding the auction of a full dino skeleton (a cousin of the T. rex) are propelled forward by the writing style and descriptions, bringing to life the Gobi landscape, Florida beaches, and the animals that once lived throughout. While not usually a fan of legal thrillers, just toss in a dinosaur custody battle and I will read and love the heck out of it. - Rachel
