Oh, Naomi Novik, is there anything you can’t do? This beautifully written blend of Jewish and Russian folklore, fantasy, and faerie tale will absolutely enchant and delight you. Though not a sequel to Uprooted, it has that same unique take on classic faerie stories that Novik is so very good at spinning. Identity and the nature of what makes a villain are thoughtfully explored, as well as how family and tradition shape you in unexpected ways. I have all the love for this book!

Naomi Novak has delivered another stunning piece of fantasy. The story, while built around the tale of “Rumpelstiltskin,” never allows itself to become tired or predictable. Every character feels fully developed and achingly human (even those that aren’t human at all). The setting somehow manages to conjure tsarist Russia with both the realism and honesty of great historical fiction and the mystery and majesty of a fairytale world . But what truly shines for me is the skillful manner in which Judaism was made central to the book. It is not just brought into the book’s historical setting, but woven into the magic practiced and burning brightly in the hearts of the characters, adding luster to a story which already glows like Staryk silver.

I loved Naomi Novik’s Uprooted so much that I have spent years awaiting Spinning Silver, and it did NOT disappoint. Spinning is not a sequel to Uprooted, but it follows in a similar style: adventure fantasy loosely inspired by a classic fairy tale and set in medieval Eastern Europe. Different from Uprooted, however, Spinning is told from the rotating viewpoints of a sizeable cast of characters, centering around three strong but very different female characters. Novik does a fantastic job of building excitement and constantly accelerating the plot. Overall, even though it’s set in winter (too much winter!) in a cold region, I found it the perfect summer read.
