I have had a love of Greek mythology as long as I remember. Of all the pantheons, the Greeks have always enthralled me, and specifically it was tales of women that stuck with me. Circe is a fantastic example of that. I loved reading her side of the interaction with Odysseus, among other (male) figures from the myths. She is complicated, smart, maybe a little vain (but hey, she is a goddess), and I enjoyed reading about her in this retelling. I would love to read more from Miller if she continues to reinvent the myths from the ladies' point of view.

Myth nerds! Get ready because Madeline Miller is back, with a gorgeous and sweeping story of Circe, the witch of ancient mythology. I've loved Miller's writing since The Song of Achilles, but I had forgotten how easily she pulls you under her spell. She sweeps you so effortlessly into the ebb and flow of her story that she makes you forget the time, and everything you're meant to be doing. Her stories are ones that ask for you to sit and pause a moment, and think about what we accept to be true and what might be known if we dig a little deeper. The characters are vibrant and alive, most especially Circe herself, who is allowed to tell her own story and speak of her triumphs and missteps herself. I'm so excited about this book, and every moment I am under the thrall of Circe I wish I would never have to leave.

Recently, Bookshop was lucky enough to host Madeline Miller for an author event and it only solidified my belief that Madeline Miller is one of the smartest novelists working today. She takes a Greek myth and infuses the story with a mixture of intellectual reflection and creative twists which makes old stories feel new and relevant again.

“This remarkable journey into mythology brings the ancient gods directly and viscerally into the present. Circe is a perfect mashup of elegant language, glorious storytelling, and exquisitely modern sensibilities. Miller's telling left me awed and moved by Circe and her story, all while wishing I could invite her over for a glass of wine on the porch. How this amazing author so perfectly melds the human and the divine, creating a story both immediate and epic, is dazzling.”

The daring, dazzling and highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller The Song of Achilles

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child-not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power-the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man's world.
