A hopeful, environmental wake-up call for teens ready to act. After finding a dead bee on his doorstep, Fleischman (Newbery Award-winner and local author) began extensive research into environmental challenges and changes. Eyes Wide Open is a tool kit for decoding the daily barrage of conflicting information about major issues (population, global economics, water, climate change). This book helps young people learn to look behind the headlines to examine how things got to be the way they are and what can be done about it. I recommend it to every teen, teacher, and parent eager to make the world a better place. Grades 6 & up.

This is by far the best book on the environment I have ever read. Not
only does it educate teens on the crucial moment in time they currently
live in, it teaches them how to look behind the headlines to find out
what's really going on, and it emphasizes the importance of taking
action and fighting to save our planet. Using graphics of all kinds--newspaper clipping, charts, old cartoons and ads--and his easy, witty
voice, Fleischman makes these complex topics understandable and
interesting. This book is completely excellent, and very important. I
hope to see both teens and adults reading it.

What's really going on with the environment--in our own backyards and the wider world? Conflicting information is offered by websites, magazines, and documentaries that blur the line between news and opinion. Not every report is reliable; not every interest group is actually composed of concerned citizens. In this dynamic account, award-winning author Paul Fleischman arms teens with the basic tools to uncover vested interests and falsehoods by vetting sources, following the money, and checking references so that they can make informed decisions about what actions to take in the worldwide battle against climate change, overconsumption, and dwindling resources. Extensive backmatter, including a glossary, bibliography, and index, as well as numerous references to websites, provides further resources.
