I absolutely love this book. The story of a girl in a magical land who harbors a secret heritage that could either ruin her life or save a kingdom, this lyrical book is filled with music, courtly intrigue, and plenty of adventure. Seraphina is perfect for anyone who loves a good book about a strong young woman finding herself. (And dragons. Lots of dragons.)
I devoured this book. The sheer musicality of the language sells it alone, but the story is genuinely interesting. Her system for the dragons is incredibly unique. It's a fantastic recommendation for literally anyone that enjoys reading about dragons or likes fantasy in general. It was so good that I bumped everything off my "To Read" list so I could read the sequel.
Summer 2012 Kids' Next List
“Here is a new and original voice that will set the Dragon genre on its ear! Seraphina has an incredible musical talent, one that she must not flaunt in case she draws attention to herself. For Seraphina is no ordinary girl; she is a half-dragon living in a human world that despises all dragons. In this lush world full of secrets and intriguing characters, readers will completely lose themselves. An exciting book!”

Lyrical, imaginative, and wholly original, this New York Times bestseller with 8 starred reviews is not to be missed. Rachel Hartman’s award-winning debut will have you looking at dragons as you’ve never imagined them before…
Seraphina is a half-dragon, descended from a dragon mother who took human form and a father who has no particular fondness for Seraphina’s kind.
Not that anyone else does either. Hers is a world where dragons and humans live and work side by side—but below the surface, tensions and hostilities are on the rise. Seraphina guards her true self with all of her being, but when a member of the royal family is brutally murdered, she’s suddenly thrust into the spotlight, drawn into the investigation alongside the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian.
As the two uncover a sinister plot to destroy the wavering peace of the kingdom, Seraphina’s struggle to protect her secret becomes increasingly difficult . . . and its discovery could mean her very life.
