On the Move by Oliver Sacks

“Neurologist Oliver Sacks’ empathy and intellectual curiosity, his delight in, as he calls it, ‘joining particulars with generalities’ and, especially, ‘narratives with neuroscience’— have never been more evident than in his beautifully conceived new book, On The Move. This meta memoir, in which Sacks reconsiders aspects of his life and work that he’s written about in a dozen previous books, is remarkably candid and deeply affecting. On The Move is a gift, a message from a writer who, though past 80 and mortally ill, retains the ethos of the handsome stud sitting astride a motorbike on its cover: Stay alive; keep moving.” —The Boston Globe

It’s a Long Story by Willie Nelson

With his homespun style and easy manner, Willie Nelson narrates his wild life—from the cotton fields in Abbott, Texas, to the top of the country music charts; from rags to riches and through tax evasion and “creative” solutions to such problems. Tying it all together is his incredible passion for music and his own personal strain of spiritual awareness. It’s a good book to get lost in, a great primer on the country music scene and many of its iconic figures, and a wonderful way to spend some time with Willie.

Born with Teeth by Kate Mulgrew

Being a dedicated Trekkie, I was drawn to actress Kate Mulgrew’s memoir for the juicy Trek gossip (it’s minimal, but delicious) and discovered she is quite a fantastic writer. There is an unapologetic honesty she brings to this book that I find absolutely refreshing. Born with Teeth is the survey of Mulgrew’s life that sings with passion and joy, remorse and loss.

Elephant Company by Vicki Croke

Elephants are amazing creatures, and no one believed that more than J. H. “Billy” Williams, who thought so highly of them that he formed a company of elephants in World War II to fight the Japanese in Burma. I very rarely read nonfiction, but I was pulled into the story of Williams and his companion, Bandoola. Full of engaging facts, as well as a testament to the bonds of friendship, this book will intrigue and delight you.

Elon Musk by Ashlee Vance

Elon Musk provides the first inside look into the life and times of Silicon Valley’s most audacious entrepreneur: the man behind PayPal, Tesla Motors, SpaceX and SolarCity. Written with exclusive access to Musk, his family, and his friends, the book traces the risk-taking entrepreneur’s journey from a rough upbringing in South Africa to the pinnacle of the global business world.
“This thrilling book will make you want to start a car company, build spaceships, and go to Mars. The only downside is when you eventually remember that you’re not Elon Musk.” —Aaron Levie, CEO of Box

Delancey by Molly Wizenberg

Molly Wizenberg’s latest memoir delivers exactly what it promises: a man, a woman, a restaurant, and a marriage. Wizenberg uses her award-winning prose to deliver what is sometimes a brutally honest story, with candid examinations of both herself and her husband Brandon, as they embark together in discovering what a life and future together will be—while also, somewhat inadvertently, endeavoring to launch a high-end pizza restaurant. A fascinating, poignant, and delicious read.

Deal by Bill Kreutzmann

The “book” came by and I got on/That’s where it all began.

Bill Kreutzmann, original drummer for the Warlocks and a long-time member of the Grateful Dead, takes us on a trip from the front door of his Palo Alto childhood home—where he meets Jerry Garcia as a boy—through the Haight, to his current home in Kauai and points in between. We meet a crazy parade of characters from Neal Cassady to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and the Who. Deal is an absolute pleasure for anyone who still misses the Boys.

Hold Still by Sally Mann

Inimitable photographer Sally Mann has written Hold Still with her “intensely seeing eye” fully focused, and it is a masterpiece. Whether addressing her childhood, her work, her storied family history in the South or her immediate family on their beloved farm, she writes assuredly, companionably, clear eyed and laid open. It’s both a beautiful work of art (with many photos) and an intimate glimpse of a remarkable life in process.
